Following the tradition of the 19th century Parisian Salon des Refusés, (when Napoleon let rejected works be exhibited alongside those accepted ones after artists protested the Salon jury’s rejection of 3000 works), Happenstance Gallery is again organising an exhibition of paintings, graphic and mixed media works, photographs and prints rejected from the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Unlike our predecessors, we are not protesting, but helping. We respect the Royal Academicians’ judgement and understand that exhibiting at the RA Summer Exhibition is a great honour and privilege, and that the RA walls are limited and a lot of good artwork has to be rejected.

We want those works to still be on show and to let the public judge which ones they like most of all, independent from experts’ decision. For this reason, every visitor to the exhibition will be asked to vote for three favourite pieces.

Let’s think together about what art is, what its value is estimated by and whether it should even be estimated at all. Let’s listen to what our deepest feelings are telling us, which artwork appeals to us and maybe we’ll discover new talents worthy of worldwide fame and appreciation, gems like Manet and Whistler, whose work would otherwise have vanished inside dusty attics or be lost to posterity.

For this reason we’ve located the exhibition in Shoreditch - the home of contemporary emerging and established artists and the bravest art.

You are invited to be the first to see new original art work by TAZ, brought to London from Ukraine by Happenstance Gallery.

TAZ is a contemporary Ukrainian artist, born in Ternopil (western Ukraine). The West is the centre of creativity in Ukraine, and Ternopil is at the heart of it.

TAZ spent a large part of his unconscious childhood and all his conscious life drawing. Having finished secondary school in 2006 he surprised even himself by entering the department of Fine and Decorative Art at the Art Academy in Ternopil. In the same year he and his friends - street artists Volt and HNMR - arranged a graffiti art show at Ternopil Art Museum which was very successful. This led to widespread recognition and exposure at numerous art festivals in the creative hub of Ukraine.

Then, in 2011 (the final year of his studies) he was kicked out of the Academy, ostensibly because of his own strong views not fitting with the Art Academy. After a not insignificant protest, TAZ was allowed back in and now he has graduated and become one of the youngest emergingl Ukrainian contemporary artists.

About TAZ Art Work

After various experiments in different techniques (graffiti, comics, street art, fine painting etc.) TAZ settled on drawings and watercolours.The genre he’s working in now is called by art critics – fantastic art. His characters, created by a deep imagination and very often wearing bird heads, have attracted loads of attention among art lovers across Europe.

Lesya Kara-Kotsya is a contemporary Ukrainian artist. As a child she used to draw floral patterns in the margins of her exercise books when she got bored at school (which happened to her very often). Years later after she’d studied art for 11 years, she started teaching it. At the same time she gave herself a task to integrate those floral patterns, which she could paint automatically in infinite varieties, into professional paintings. That’s how her unique style appeared. Art critics didn’t know how to identify her style and let her give it a name herself. So she called it KARAKOKO taking the first part from her family name and the second part from traditional baroque, rococo etc.

KARAKOKO is very distinctive due to its brave colour combinations, floral patterns and fantastic creatures which all come from Lesya’s imagination. Amazingly, she gets more ideas than she can physically transfer onto canvas even though she works 12-15 hours per day as an artist and designer.

Jennifer Hedley – Artist

“You can not know the meaning of your life until you are connected to the power that created you.” Shri Mataji

Jennifer Hedley is the featured artist in ‘Shift’. Her work has an Indian focus based on her time spent in India, and her experience with yoga and kundalini states. During her profound time in India she spent time with an impoverished auto-richkshaw’s family and that is where she met the little boy Nado. Jennifer created ‘Nado the Indian Prince’ which is of a poor boy who even though he had very little material objects he was rich in many ways.

Jennifer was inspired by the spirituality of India – she visited Hindu Temples, Buddhist Monasteries, Mosques, shrines & many holy places. She learnt that even when people have so little in material value they have sheer faith with their spiritualism that everything is going to be okay with their lives. They believe in a force greater than themselves.

This led Jennifer to learn Reiki & Sahaja Yoga which is a form of meditation healing which works with energy that is the force which is greater than ourselves. Our Higher Self. These healings methods can transform and ‘Shift’ a person energy to a higher vibration. To connect with the innocence that is within everyone. Through this process an inner transformation takes place by which one becomes moral, united, integrated and balanced. One can actually feel the all pervading divine power as a cool breeze, as described in all religions and spiritual traditions of the world.

During her time in India materials were limited. This began Jennifer’s journey of using recycled materials to create structures and sculptural pieces. One of her pieces entitled ‘We are all made of Energy Particles’ is using magazines & newspaper to represent the energy that we are made of, each roll of paper represents chakras of energy.

Her work goes beyond this to conceive of altered states and other tentative steps towards enlightenment. Spiritual growth and a Shift of conscientiousness gives tools to lift the veils of illusion, see truth, expand and contract time, raise vibration, achieve higher states of consciousness, open our hearts and to fundamentally know yourself in a new and more loving way. These are keys themes of inspiration for Jennifer’s work.

In September, NATALIA MILOVIDOVA, originally from Eastern Ukraine, will be exhibiting her spiritually uplifting mandalas simultaneously in London and Kyiv. The resonance created by viewing these illuminated artworks will add to the pool of positive energy we need in the current climate of consciousness shifting.

Here is what Milovidova has to say about her inspirational mandalas:

Resonance is stimulation of vibrations of one body by another body of the same frequency. Due to resonance phenomenon one can identify and/or enhance even very weak vibrations, since resonance increases the amplitude of vibrations. Increase in the amplitude is only a consequence of resonance, and the reason is coincidence of external (stimulating) frequency with the internal (intrinsic) frequency of an object or subject.

If we translate these terms of physics and mechanics into the field of psychology, we can say that various external factors, making an impact on us, can cause psychological resonance inside us, thereby increasing the resonant quality.

Natalia Milovidova is suggesting that we should find our own resonances and strengthen our own qualities. The external force to discover our resonances will her artwork: shapes and states that she put into mandalas.

The viewing technique is as follows:

1) Remember the state you are in;

2) look at the image for 2-3 minutes.;

3) track the changes inside you after watching: changes may be at the levels of sounds, sensations (warmth \ cold; tight \ unloaded; nice \ not nice etc.), smell, visualization ….

OTTO SCHADE (aka OSCH)

Otto was born in Chile in 1971. He initially studied Architecture at the Bio Bio University and Construction and Design Architecturein Concepcion, Chile. As a successful architect, he has been awarded for public and private projects.

Otto has always felt an avid fascination for the Surrealists, as well as the freedom which surrounds abstract painting. This influence has made Otto turn his creative skills to painting, which has become his strongest passion and for which he has also been recognized with an honorable mention.

With the development of this other talent, Otto begins a journey in the search for new ideas and wider exposure for his work, taking him to exhibit his work in Concepcion (Chile), Berlin (Germany), Moscow (Russia) , New York (US), London (UK), and now in Amsterdam (Netherlands). He lives and works currently in London.

Otto’s painting ranges from abstract and surrealism to even urban art. Working mainly with oil paint and traditional supports such as stretched canvas, he also practices other techniques such as collage, illustration and stencil. The themes behind his compositions read in a personal, metaphorical sense with a sharp, ironic touch.

Otto Schade creates some of the most distinctive street art around. His paintings show a unique style, proving an inventive imagination as well as a refined technique.

He’s well known for his depictions of the human form, composed from interwoven ribbons.

Otto Schade hasn’t always been a street artist. He has been an architect, surrealist and abstract oil painter. He still teaches architecture but, coming up to his 41st birthday, Otto is being recognised all over London for his street art, which has been gracing the walls of Hoxton and Shoreditch landmarks such as the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane.

Otto is taking on London in 2012 with Olympic themed art works and psych-punk-spiritual images of the Queen of England. Limited edition prints are on sale at Slaughter House Salon as well as incredible street art prototype oil paintings commemorating the Olympic success of Bradley Wiggins and Andy Murray. This Chilean-German artist has epitomised London in a way as deep as any opening ceromony.
